You may have seen that for the last 8 days or so performance across the site has been pretty terrible! I have been seeing a number of issues on this front and I can see that the Elite Galaxy Online server has smoke coming out of it right now !!!
The reason for all of this is that with the release of integration with EDDiscovery, the number of concurrent discoveries coming into Elite Galaxy Online has gone through the roof and the systems are struggling to cope. In particular, it seems as though its the dynamic record tracking system which is causing the most problems.
Basically, every time a discovery is recorded at Elite Galaxy Online, the dynamic record system kicks in and checks whether the discovery has broken any of the applicable records. This is pretty database intensive as it has to look across all of the other discoveries of that type. It looks as though this record checking is getting backed up as it can’t keep up with the number of discoveries coming in which is leading to the bad performance.
As a temporary measure, I have just switched off the record tracking system so that I can see whether this is indeed the root cause of the problem. (I’m pretty sure it is as whilst I’m writing this i’m seeing the rate of objects coming in from EDDiscovery has just dramatically increased).
Whilst this is switched off, I will trigger a full update of the record tracking system once per day but unfortunately it does mean for now that any new record breakers coming in won’t be immediately reported.
Hopefully I can find a way of dealing with this going forward. In the meantime, please let me know if you see any improvements.
UPDATE 21/8 – I’m about half way through fixing these performance issues now in development and I’m seeing some very positive results so far so fingers crossed I can switch the record tracking system back on even with the new amount of discoveries coming in at some point.
In the meantime, updating the system every couple of hours is working ok and records are still being broken! Today so far, Commander Taen has discovered an interesting Class IV gas giant which is the most massive yet to be recorded and also claims the highest density and highest surface gravity of any Class IV gas giant.
Commander Deathinator has discovered a Gas giant with water based life with an extremely eccentric orbit which would definitely be worth seeing in the Orrery.
Last but not least Commander Cruento Mucrone discovered a high metal content planet with trace amounts of silicates in it’s atmosphere which is the lowest yet to be recorded.
