Current Performance Issues

Hey Commanders,

You may have seen that for the last 8 days or so performance across the site has been pretty terrible!  I have been seeing a number of issues on this front and I can see that the Elite Galaxy Online server has smoke coming out of it right now !!!

The reason for all of this is that with the release of integration with EDDiscovery, the number of concurrent discoveries coming into Elite Galaxy Online has gone through the roof and the systems are struggling to cope.  In particular, it seems as though its the dynamic record tracking system which is causing the most problems.

Basically, every time a discovery is recorded at Elite Galaxy Online, the dynamic record system kicks in and checks whether the discovery has broken any of the applicable records.  This is pretty database intensive as it has to look across all of the other discoveries of that type.  It looks as though this record checking is getting backed up as it can’t keep up with the number of discoveries coming in which is leading to the bad performance.

As a temporary measure, I have just switched off the record tracking system so that I can see whether this is indeed the root cause of the problem. (I’m pretty sure it is as whilst I’m writing this i’m seeing the rate of objects coming in from EDDiscovery has just dramatically increased).

Whilst this is switched off, I will trigger a full update of the record tracking system once per day but unfortunately it does mean for now that any new record breakers coming in won’t be immediately reported.

Hopefully I can find a way of dealing with this going forward.  In the meantime, please let me know if you see any improvements.

Cheers

Commander Wolzan

UPDATE 21/8 – I’m about half way through fixing these performance issues now in development and I’m seeing some very positive results so far so fingers crossed I can switch the record tracking system back on even with the new amount of discoveries coming in at some point.

In the meantime, updating the system every couple of hours is working ok and records are still being broken!  Today so far, Commander Taen has discovered an interesting Class IV gas giant which is the most massive yet to be recorded and also claims the highest density and highest surface gravity of any Class IV gas giant.

Commander Deathinator has discovered a Gas giant with water based life with an extremely eccentric orbit which would definitely be worth seeing in the Orrery.

Last but not least Commander Cruento Mucrone discovered a high metal content planet with trace amounts of silicates in it’s atmosphere which is the lowest yet to be recorded.

Yes, way faster thanks. Guess I am partially to blame with syncing 3k records through EDD ;). I’m sure near real-time indexing of records would be acceptable say 5-30 mins between updates.

God Speed Commander! Thanks for the update

Thanks for letting me know its working better at your end. I can definitely see an improvement here and things seem to be running normally again. Updating the record tracking system on a schedule could definitely be done but I really like the idea of every discovery being immediately reported as a record breaker or not so am gonna fight to try and preserve that if at all possible.

EDD is the app to be. No surprise that you’re getting bombed.

No wonder Frontier leaves so much of the work for explorers to third-party developers. They *do* have all the data, and they could charge for a complete data dump in the Frontier Store…

This is also a Beta Weekend, so max volume coming in as well. You might want to start implementing downtimes, for the record updates, and have the new stuff go into a cache.

Or, by a server at least *eight* times as powerful as the one you have now (just like drag on the airplane, to double performance requires the cube of the energy at V1).

I have also been bombarding the EGO system since I was introduced to it recently, sorry, I love the tool, good luck with the repairs.

PS: Records relating to the total number of body/star per system would be nice to see? e.g. I discovered a system with seven black holes plus more in it this week, I would like to know if that is a record in itself….
